2024 Christmas Wishes and Ice Baths – from all at WSC Plumbing
Spending time with family and friends at Christmas is great. Maybe even sharing an ice bath can be cool?
No?
What about getting your wife an indoor swimming pool for Christmas? In the living room…
OK, so you’d rather spend time around the tree, warm and cosy instead. Like a normal person… Fair enough…
Here’s some advice to keep your home free from ice baths, indoor swimming pools, and leaks this Christmas.
If you’re going away this Christmas:
1. It is best practice to isolate your water supply.
Check out my blog on how to do this. How to isolate your water supply.
2. Keep your electrical supply on as usual and set your heating to a desirable mode.
3. For pressurised systems, make sure they are topped up to 1 bar minimum.
A pressurised system is something like a gas fired combination boiler.
Depending on how long your property is left vacant , the heating thermostat could be set as low as 11 degrees C. Some of the most devastating problems are caused by the lack of applying these important principles.
If you have to leave the water supply on, then it is worth investing in some tech. Because things like a solenoid shut off stop cock , with a wifi controlled 240 volt supply, water leak sensor devices, with smart wifi control options or even a smart control programmable thermostat, with wifi control options. Can save you big time.
Reliable leak and flood prevention saves a ton of stress and means you don’t come home to soggy plasterboard flooring and no ceilings.
When you get back from your time away –
Turn your stop cock back on and check the cold water is back to normal.
Now run the cold water and hot water supplies to flush the pipes.
Depending on how long you have been away.
Flushing the toilet first helps to clear the cold feed pipework to them.
Before flushing out the other terminal points, these are things like your taps and showers.
If you have stored water in tanks in the loft or airing cupboard, flush through the gravity cold and hot for longer periods.
And do this before using the taps.
And only use the cold mains supply which comes to your kitchen cold tap for consumption. This is called your potable water which is safe for humans to consume.
Extend these flush times if you have any lead pipework in your property.
In some cases where steel pipes still exist particles and discolouration can occur. And so it is reasonable to expect to keep it on for longer to flush it all out.
So, from all of us at WSC Plumbing, we wish you a very merry, warm and dry Christmas and New Year!
